Summerland Corp., ATC, Summerland Monastery (USA) & Tierra de Verano (Mexico)
History
Summerland Corp. was founded in 1990, incorporated in Florida in 1993 and brought into Arizona in 1996. In 1997 renamed Summerland Monastery because it resided on 1,227 mountainous acres along the Coronado National Forest on the north and Arizona State land on the east and west. The words of John Overpeck, PhD at a November 2007 conference on climate change confirmed that a move to Central Mexico in May 2008 was wise.
Focus of Activities
Summerland volunteers are creating a place where all children have the opportunity to reach their full human potential through literacy. Summerland volunteers have always been devoted to outdoor ecological education: green learning; especially for children. For 6 years in Florida, 12 in Arizona and now a year in Mexico they quietly coach others in living with less impact on the planet. They feel that literacy is vital to understanding eco-solutions; they are raising funds to build an ecologically sound public library in an area where there are no public libraries and books are expensive. They are also planning to go mobile with a biblobus: a mobile library. They are serving people living in 3rd world conditions through education and equine-therapy.
Notable Achievements
From 1996 until 2008 Don and Jacquie Mackenzie lived off the power grid in eco-buildings that they and other volunteers built. The average amount of recyclable materials used in the building was 60%. Over 5,000 sq. ft. of buildings were made of (1) strawbale, (2) papercrete, (3) dry stacked block (4) or recycled campers. One permanent free-standing dwelling was made for a total cost of $154 and was used as a bedroom for over 10 years with only minor roof repairs.
Celebrity Supporters
Summerland has always been about individual eco-volunteers "walking their talk" for each other and the leaders of tomorrow. No famous people have ever been involved in the work of Summerland, but some of the students will be famous for making smart choices in the years to come.
Governance & Financial
Summerland Corp. is a non-profit 501(3)c faith-based non-government organization staffed by volunteers who make the education of others their service business. Their work is motivated by the belief that the Earth is alive and is our Mother Gaia; who deserves our respect and attention. There is no faith-based teaching; subjects taught free of charge are either identical to public schools or directly related to ecology.
Regions / countries which benefit
Members of Summerland reside in Massachusetts, Georgia, Florida, Washington State and Arizona, as well as Central Mexico; friends all over the globe. Directly the children of a small village in central Mexico are receiving knowledge.
