Crop Rotation

Crop rotation is a farming practice where farmers grow different crops in a field every year. The point of this practice is to maintain levels of nutrients in the soil which can be depleted if the same crop is grown in a field year after year. One of the most popular crops for rotation are legumes such as peas, because they restore vital nitrogen to the soil.

Crop rotation can also halt or limit the pest cycle in an area, avoiding devastation to a single crop. Many organic farmers use crop rotation in order to maintain the health of the soil and also to avoid using chemical fertilizers and pesticides which many commercial farmers must use.
