Desertification

Desertification is the process whereby through human intervention; and degradation occurs and local flora and fauna are lost. This leads to the creation of sand dunes through erosion and wind, which can even encroach upon cities. Desertification is a process that originates solely with human activity, ranging from overgrazing, poor farming practices, deforestation, increased fir frequency, and global climate changes.

The cost of desertification is high. Many species go extinct due to the loss of their local habitat. It's also estimated that due to desertification in Africa, the land will be able to feed only 25% of the population by 2025.
