Green Manure

Green manure is a type of cover crop that is grown, and then tilled back into the soil to improve it for the next crop. Popular green manure includes vetch and clover, which are nitrogen fixing plants which help enrich the soil. Green manure also helps aid in water retention and aeration of the soil.

Plants with deep roots are also helpful in green manure because they pull up nutrients that shallow rooted plants can't access. Green manure is a crucial practice for organic farmers because they rely on natural processes to help fertilize the soil, which green manure does perfectly.
