Ionizing Radiation

Ionizing radiation is used on commercially sold food in order to sterilize it, removing harmful bacteria such as Salmonella and E. Coli. Despite the benefits there have been serious concerns about the widespread use of ionizing radiation in our foodstuffs.

Small amounts of radiation have not been proven to be harmful, but regular consumption of radiated food over the long term has a buildup effect. The body can counteract some radiation, but only so much. Effects of exposure to radiation can include cellular and DNA damage which can lead to cancer.
